In 2024, María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde participated with Beyond Human Perception in The Senses of Plants, a group exhibition held at Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen, Germany, and curated by Julia Katharina Thiemann. The exhibition brought together contemporary artistic practices investigating plant perception, intelligence and forms of communication, proposing new perspectives on coexistence between humans and plant organisms.

Castellanos and Valverde presented Beyond Human Perception, a video installation comparing the physiological responses of plants and humans to the same stimulus: live music. During the performance from which the work originated, data from both organisms were recorded simultaneously. A system specifically developed for the project visualises these data, making it possible to observe patterns, correspondences and differences between the responses of plants and humans to changes occurring in their environment.

The exhibition also featured works by artists including Anais-karenin, Marisa Benjamim, Suzette Bousema, Anca Bucur, Patricia Domínguez, Nicole L’Huillier, Špela Petrič, Elsa Salonen, Miriam Simun, Saša Spačal, Anton Vidokle and Zheng Bo. Through different artistic and scientific approaches, the exhibition questioned anthropocentric conceptions of plants and explored alternative ways of understanding their capacities and the relationships humans establish with them.
