Creating technological body interfaces to measure and make perceptible environmental variables that lie beyond the reach of human senses
In 2019, María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde led the workshop Creating Technological Body Interfaces at MUSAC, connected to the development of Open Environmental Kit, a project selected through the museum’s Laboratorio 987 open call.
Over two days, participants explored the creation of body interfaces capable of recording environmental variables that the human body cannot directly perceive. Using sensors, electronics and digital fabrication tools, the workshop focused on building wearable technological devices capable of measuring environmental conditions and translating them into information that could be perceived by the person wearing them.
Castellanos and Valverde shared methodologies and tools developed through their own artistic practice, based on research into the relationships between body, technology and environment and on the creation of devices that expand human perceptual capacities. The workshop brought these research processes into a hands-on learning context through experimentation and prototype development.
